Underneath the Underneath is Not Deep Enough Character Name: Hatake Kakashi.
Age: 20.
Birthday: September 15th
Rank outside ANBU: Jounin.
Affiliated with which ANBU branch: Hunters -- field ops
Registration Number: 009720
Physical Appearance
Height: 181cm (5'11")
Weight: 67.5 kg (148lbs)
Blood Type: O
Hair: Silver-grey and fairly shaggy. It stands up in spikes despite its length--too short to be called long, and too long to be called short--and sweeps a little to the left. Without his hitai-ate holding it back, his bangs fall forward and hide his eyes (also his nose and a decent slice of the rest of his face). Facial hair, eyebrows and body hair are the same shade, very sparse and fine. He keeps himself clean-shaven because stubble feels unpleasant against his mask.
Eyes: The right is normal, if a little sleepy looking, with an iris that falls somewhere between grey and very dark blue. The left is not normal, nor is it his. The sharingan--one previous owner, slightly used--typically hides behind his closed eyelid, scar and hitai-ate. Out of sight, if not mind.
Skin: Very pale, almost white. When he removes his mask there is a faint tan-line drawn around his right eye.
Facial Features: Hidden, though it is assumed he does possess them. Beneath the mask lies a slightly narrow, somewhat delicate jaw, fine-bladed nose, and perfectly ordinary lips. A small, white scar just catches the left edge of his lower lip. It pulls his smile slightly crooked.
Other Physical Traits: At an even twenty years old Kakashi has just about finished growing, if not quite filling out his somewhat angular frame. Slim-shouldered, narrow-hipped and long-legged, he possesses the lean, whippy build of someone designed for speed and flexibility, rather than brute strength. Which is not to say that he isn’t strong.
Handedness: Ambidextrous for weapons, but tends to favour his right.
Voice: Low, even, with a touch of drawl.
Identifying Marks: ANBU tattoo on his left biceps, long vertical scar bisecting his left eyelid, sharingan eye, and the typical collection of scars a ninja picks up through the course of his life. The skin of his right palm is covered in a slightly shiny burn scar, legacy of the technique that involves him holding raw chakra before he shoves it through someone's chest.
Usual Clothing: On duty, jounin uniform or ANBU armour. Off duty Kakashi prefers to wear ninja blacks on the grounds that they're simple, black, and easy to move in. When forced he will dress down into non-ninja blacks, provided they're simple and easy to move in.
ANBU Mask: Dog, painted in black and blue slashes. Fierce and alert looking.
Living Situation: HQ compound. Third floor, room 309.
Ninja Skills
Fighting Style: With his sharingan eye Kakashi has collected an impressive arsenal of jutsu to draw upon. It is unsurprising, therefore, that his preferred style tends to revolve around ninjutsu. Because of the amount of chakra his sharingan and jutsu tend to use Kakashi prefers to finish a fight quickly and neatly, and is content to strike from the shadows rather then get involved in a ten-round knock out battle. As you would expect from any ANBU--or indeed, any genius--he is also skilled at genjutsu and taijutsu, though by no means an expert. He also professes an unusual talent in seals as well, though these are less use in an actual battle then they are in the wider spectrum stealth missions.
Preferred Weapons: Kunai, shuriken, tags and the standard issue ANBU ninjaken. Though, more often then not, Kakashi will rely on jutsu and nothing else.
Special Jutsu: Kakashi's only original jutsu is the Chidori, which will remain his unless he decides to perform it in front of an Uchiha, as they will be the only ones capable of using it.
Service Record: Graduated the academy at 5, made Chuunin at 6, Jounin at 13, ANBU at 15. Fought both in the war and against the Kyuubi; lacks fond memories for either event.
Personality
General Personality Traits: In a word? Conflicted. Raised between two sets of juxtaposing ideals, Kakashi walks a fine line between duty and conscience. On the one hand his father, an excellent shinobi once comparable to the Sannin themselves; a genius ninja, much as Kakashi is, and destroyed by one act of humanity.
Lesson the first: do your duty.
On the other hand Obito, his friend-not-friend who forced Kakashi to–-quite literally–-view the world from a different perspective.
Lesson the second: do what is right.
And then there was Yondaime, who did both, murdered a demon, and broke Kakashi’s fifteen-year-old heart.
Most of the time Kakashi is aloof, unapproachable, and content to remain as such. He has no interest in reforming any special bonds--having learned that they hurt to sever–-and attempts to keep his distance from his fellow ANBU. He cares when they die, but he doesn’t care to get close.
Having said that, to the few people he does consider a friend (though he'll never use the word), Kakashi is loyal to a fault. He may not be nice to them, but he'd walk over hot coals if they asked without a murmur. Well, maybe a murmur--a snarky murmur--but he'd do it.
Kakashi is introverted, almost obsessively private, and somewhat prone to fits of melancholy coloured by guilt. The latter is expressed in a number of delightful ways including, but not limited to: anger, insomnia, and a sudden jump in the number of at-risk missions he takes.
On the battlefield Kakashi maintains a fragile balance between a solid mission focus and an almost neurotic desire to protect his teammates. He has nearly gotten himself killed more then once attempting to complete both objectives. Because of this he is often considered better suited to running solo missions. On the other hand, more often then not, his teammates make it back alive…
When he forgets to guard himself, Kakashi’s sense of humour is remarkably silly, sometimes to the point of being surreal. Most of the time, however, he remains cutting and acidic, occasionally mellowing to simply sardonic with his closest friends (i.e. the people that stick around and won’t go away).
Quirks: Between his mask and his hitai-ate, it is generally only possible to see one quarter of his face. He excels at keeping people at a distance--with a few small exceptions--and having a witty, or just plain bizarre, response for almost anything. Sleeps like the dead--once he drops he doesn't move, not even in the grip of a nightmare--and doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, preferring savory or salty flavours.
Sexual Orientation: Gay. He's not particularly open about it, but he doesn't deny it. It just is.
Gifts/Talents: Kick-ass ninja. Fantastic memory; excellent sense of smell; can eat without appearing to take off his mask; can pick apart a jutsu after only one viewing--with the sharingan, of course--and work out the seals required to form it. He can also braid hair.
Flaws: Not so much a social person, Kakashi is very, very good at getting people to stay away. He often forgets to brush his hair. He has atendency to blame himself when a teammate dies, whether or not he could have actually done anything about it. Slight superiority complex about his talent, coupled with something of an inferiority complex about everything else. Keeps lousy time. Takes a certain amount of delight in pushing other people's buttons. No taste in literature. He will, with very little thought, absolutely flatline his chakra trying to keep his teammates alive, resulting in an involuntary nap that usually lasts about a week or so.
Religion and Philosophy: Culturally shinto/buddhist, but his father was not a great believer in gods, and neither is Kakashi.
Likes and Loves: His dogs, salt-fried saury, grilled eggplant with miso, spending the day in bed with a good book, being warm.
Dislikes and Hates: Tempura, the feeling he gets after draining his chakra, anything overly sweet-tasting, Shiranui Genma, teammates who just don't get it when he's trying to save their lives. And loss, of any kind.
Fears: In a word? Failure.
Dreams and Ambitions: He has no answer for this question.
Relationships
Family: None living.
Friends: Mostly dead. If you changed the definition to People He Doesn't Actively Hate, Tousaki Ryouma and Sakamoto Ginta might find themselves mentioned.
Lovers: None for more than one night. [Though, lately, he seems to be involved with one Tousaki Ryouma. And he's still not quite sure how that happened.]
Hero: Minato-sensei. Often known as The Fourth, Yondaime-sama, and that guy that did that thing with the fox. There was also a red-eyed kid at one point who turned out to be not so bad.
Enemies: As far as he knows, none living. Unless you count Shiranui Genma.
Personal History: Son of the infamous White Fang and a genius in his own right, Kakashi’s path was determined from the start. Unfortunately, the start was somewhat sour. With his mother dead from childbirth-–sometimes there are things even medical jutsu can’t fix–-Kakashi was raised in the efficient if not overly affectionate care of his father. Academy graduate at five and chuunin at six, he began his career as a ninja promisingly.
But when he was seven, his father did something remarkably stupid and opted to save his teammates rather then complete a mission, costing Konohagakure dearly in the war effort. Deeply ashamed and ostracized even by the people he had saved, Hatake Sakumo sought to clear his name and restore his honour by committing seppuku. Kakashi’s only spoken regret about this event is that he was not there to act as his father’s kaishakunin–-the person responsible for beheading the individual taking his own life; a preventative against having to sit quietly for thirty minutes waiting to bleed to death–-as he only arrived in time to find his father’s kneeling body in the main room.
After this Kakashi became arrogant, humourless, and by-the-book, following the one-hundred rules of shinobi conduct to the letter. An excellent shinobi, he continued up the ranks, and under the tutelage of Namikaze Minato–-the not yet Yondaime-–was promoted to Jounin at the relatively tender age of thirteen. He was not, however, much of a team player, disliking one teammate (Uchiha Obito) and professing a certain amount of indifference to the other (Rin).
Then he lost an eye, lost a friend he hadn’t realised he’d had, perfected a jutsu, and gained a whole new viewpoint. Slightly red-tinged.
Trapped between two opposing ethos and unsure of himself, Kakashi stuck to the things he knew: his promise to protect Rin with his life, and his duty to his village. Only months after Obito’s death a fragile peace descended. Minato-sensei became the Yondaime, and Kakashi discovered he wasn’t quite so indifferent to Rin, going so far as to call her a friend and, perhaps, a confidant, bonded over their shared loss.
Then the Kyuubi attacked and Minato-sensei–-Yondaime-sama–-played the big damn hero and got himself killed with glory and honour and Kakashi’s heart held carefully between his very steady hands; Rin dead in the leaves because she poured her chakra into Kakashi and Minato and kept none to heal herself.
The universe loves irony.
And Kakashi was left a team of one. Which was a shame because he was just getting the hang of the team thing, the not-being-a-jackass thing.
So he joined ANBU because it seemed like a good idea and Minato wasn’t exactly around to drag him out by the hair. He seems to be good at it, so he doesn’t intend to leave quite yet.
